On the front of the medals there is:
-a Greek goddess
-the coliseum of the ancient Athens
-a Greek vase known as an amphora
-a horse-drawn chariot
-the year
-number of Olympiad
-and host city

There was a total of 1,838 medals awarded in the 1996 games there was:
-604 gold medals

-and 630 bronze medals

In the ancient Olympics first place winners were given an olive wreath to wear on his head, because they did not award medals and second and third place was awarded nothing. http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/olymphlx/olymedal.htm

Week 4/ symbolism of the olympic rings

http://ask.yahoo.com/20020214.html The five Olympic rings symbol represents 'the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic games'. Speeking of the rings what do the colours mean. Well it might be true that at least one of these colours are on the flags of the people that compete in the Olympics.
